Take this criticism however you wish, but I find it odd that a technical infrastructure project would have almost 1,200 uncategorized pages in its database. Respectfully, --NibKing (talk) 05:13, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

This wiki is very disorganized and is lacking a lot of the most basic infrastructure. E.g. one uncategorized page is Albert: why was this just blanked instead of deleted or redirected? No idea but it's been that way for six years. Koavf (talk) 10:03, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Opinions vary on the best way to organize any given wiki. cf. w:en:WP:Categories, lists, and navigation templates. In addition to the 3 options in that Enwiki page, there is the 4th method of using subpages to organize contents, e.g. the uncategorized Analytics/... pages. Many of the pages on this wiki use either the subpages or navbox methods, and the people who use those pages are presumably satisfied with that. There are some recently-started efforts to make improvements to this wiki as a whole, but having every page categorized is not a priority, and possibly not even a goal (it hasn't been discussed, you're the first people to mention categories). For contrast, meta-wiki and mediawiki-wiki both have over 5,000 (the maximum cached result) uncategorized pages. (informally: see also mw:User:Quiddity/Zanzu problem #2 ;-) HTH. Tracking file usage on Commons

As far as I can see, this talk page is the nearest thing Wikitech has to a village pump. Please move this elsewhere if there's somewhere more appropriate.

Because Wikitech uses InstantCommons to use files on Wikimedia Commons, those uses don't automatically appear on Commons file pages in the way that uses on most Wikimedia projects do. I've just set up a bot on Commons, Usage Bot, that will track uses of files on Wikitech (and eventually other sites, I hope) in galleries below c:Commons:Files used on Wikitech. That way, use of Commons files on Wikitech will be (rather indirectly) visible on Commons file pages. See c:File:WMCS data services.svg for an example. --bjh21 (talk) 22:14, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

Deploying the Phonos in-line audio player to your Wiki

Hello!

Apologies if this message is not in your language, ⧼Please help translate⧽ to your language.

This wiki will soon be able to use the inline audio player implemented by the Phonos extension. This is part of fulfilling a wishlist proposal of providing audio links that play on click.

With the inline audio player, you can add text-to-speech audio snippets to wiki pages by simply using a tag:

<phonos file="audio file" label="Listen"/>

The above tag will show the text next to a speaker icon, and clicking on it will play the audio instantly without taking you to another page. A common example where you can use this feature is in adding pronunciation to words as illustrated on the English Wiktionary below.

{{audio|en|En-uk-English.oga|Audio (UK)}}

Could become:

<phonos file="En-uk-English.oga" label="Audio (UK)"/>

The inline audio player will be available in your wiki in 2 weeks time; in the meantime, we would like you to read about the features and give us feedback or ask questions about it in this talk page.

Thank you!

Requesting admin rights

There's no real village pump or admin's noticeboard here, so I'm using this to request admin rights. As you can see from my recent edits and deleted contributions, I've been trying to fight spam and vandalism here and I would be more successful if I could block and delete.

And furthermore, as a heads up, we have a few bureaucrats who have not edited in years. While this is a non-SUL wiki and the danger of having an account hijacked is lower, it may still be a good idea to remove advanced user rights in some of these cases:

Thanks. Koavf (talk) 08:11, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Please see Wikitech:Content administrators for how to request access. --Ameisenigel (talk) 17:42, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Editability

Should the main page say that nearly all pages on Wikitech, including itself, can be edited just by having an account? (because most wikis dont allow you to edit the front page) Anohthterwikipedian (talk) 01:36, 28 October 2025 (UTC)

I don't know that this is the most important thing, but I'll change some language on it. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 09:39, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
Wait. Now I have no clue what you're talking about. Just propose the change you think should be made. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 09:41, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
@Koavf: At the time of writing that, the Main Page wasnt Goldlocked, and I was thinking it would say something like Wikitech does not permit editing without an account, though having an account allows you to edit almost any page, including this one. Now that it has protection, my above question is redundant,and this section should be archived.
Anohthterwikipedian (talk) 10:27, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
The historic reasons for Main Page being editable by autoconfirmed accounts goes back to Wikitech's days as a fishbowl wiki for Developer accounts. The layered barriers of a separate account system, requiring all editors to be authenticated, and autoconfirmed were enough to keep Main Page vandalism at an easily manageable level. Now that it is a SUL wiki the full protection makes more sense. Thanks for locking it down tighter @Koavf. -- BryanDavis (talk) 23:27, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
