Wikitech/SUL-migration
Wikitech's authentication backend will be switched from LDAP[1] to Wikimedia Unified Login (SUL); decoupling your Wikimedia Developer Account (LDAP) from Wikitech.
After the process is complete:
- Developer accounts will be managed via Wikimedia IDM and not Wikitech.
- Users will be able to login and edit Wikitech using their Wikimedia Unified Login (SUL). Read more about SUL in metawiki.
Why?
Wikitech is the only wiki using the LDAP authentication backend, since a Wikitech account was actually a Wikimedia Developer Account. From a technical administration point of view, it has been a uniquely configured wiki, requiring special casing when performing infrastructure migrations and updates. Wikimedia wish to unify and simplify future access and maintenance.
How?
The migration will be completed in 3 phases:
Phase 1
1st October 2024: Wikimedia Developer account management will be transitioning to Wikimedia IDM. From this point on, users will be managing their Developer account directly through idm.wikimedia.org, providing a more streamlined experience.
During phase 1 you will be unable to login to Wikitech using your Developer account password. You will have to request a password reset through Special:PasswordReset if you wish to edit Wikitech prior to the SUL unification step.[2] In other words, for a brief period of time, Wikimedia Developers will have 3 separate accounts:
- Wikitech local account
- Developer account managed via Wikimedia IDM
- Wikimedia Unified Login (SUL)
Additionally, we will 'soft-connect' Wikitech to SUL; Users will be able to login either by using their current Wikitech username (i.e. Wikitech local account), or linked SUL account (please read the instructions below).[3]
Phase 2
30th November 2024: Wikitech will be switched to only use SUL. Any accounts not manually merged by then, but connected to SUL via IDM, will be automatically merged. If a username mismatch occurs, it will be renamed to match the SUL username.
Phase 3
30th January 2025: Any accounts that remain unconnected will be assigned a new SUL account. If a username conflicts with an existing SUL account, it will be renamed to Username~wikitechwiki
. We will remove any SUL connection overrides, making wikitech.wikimedia.org function like any other SUL-enabled wiki.
Please note that merging two SUL accounts is currently not possible.
What You Should Do
My Wikimedia Developer Account username matches my Wikimedia Unified Login (SUL) username!
Great news! Please use the Special:MergeAccount option in Wikitech, and merge the two. You are done!
My Wikimedia Developer Account username is different from my Wikimedia Unified Login (SUL) one.
- Please visit https://idm.wikimedia.org and follow the instructions provided to link your Developer account to your existing Wikimedia Global Account (SUL). Such Wikitech accounts will be renamed on 30th November 2024.
- Or go to Wikitech:Rename requests and write down your username change request.
I have followed the instructions, but I am still having issues.

Notes
- ↑ LDAP : Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
- ↑ A password reset is only necessary if you want to edit Wikitech between 1 October 2024 and 30 November 2024. Also, the temporary password will be removed once the Wikitech account is connected into SUL account.
- ↑ When a Wikitech account is connected to SUL, its email will also be changed to the one from SUL.
