Help

Hello Andre,

I am Tulsi, a volunteer member of Maithili Wikimedians User Group. I am writing this mail to let you know that I have enabled two factor authentication in my wikimedia account and dont have access to google authenticator, as the app has been uninstalled mistakely from my phone. Unfortunately, I lost recovery backup codes too. I can't login to my wikimedia account because there is asking authentication token and i don't have. I would like to request you to please help me disabling 2FA from my wikimedia account "User:Tulsi Bhagat". Also, I am not able to report a bug on wikimedia phabricator because my phabricator account has been disabled by someone or may automatically. Thanks for your consideration. @Tulsi Bhagat: Hi! You also sent me an email about this, hence see my email reply. In short: I think I do not have any power to disable 2FA on any of your accounts; if you think that I have such power, please tell me how/why. Thanks, --aklapper (talk) 12:59, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Only root users can IIRC, as long as they are convinced on the authenticity of the request and with the go-ahead of Trust & Safety. Resetting passwords and removing 2FAs for accounts are very risky operations. MarcoAurelio (talk) 13:05, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Handled in phab:T159067 instead. --aklapper (talk) 18:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I don’t know where the noticeboards are, so I am asking here

How do I change my shell name? – Ilovemydoodle2 (talk) 09:16, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Also, how do I disable the VisualEditor? – Ilovemydoodle2 (talk) 09:19, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ilovemydoodle2: Please ask in public places instead of pinging random individuals, and please be way more specific when asking in public places (what's a "shell name" and where to see that after which steps?; on which page (full URL) do you see VisualEditor and what makes you think it's VisualEditor?) Thanks, --aklapper (talk) 14:55, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, but as I state before, I don’t know where the public places are here. Also, this is what mean by "shell name". The visual editor appears on all pages by default, and the option to disable it is missing. – Ilovemydoodle2 (talk) 19:02, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Also, why are there so many account being created? Spam? – Ilovemydoodle2 (talk) 19:04, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ilovemydoodle2: Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing as on every wiki. If you have never used your shell name then there is no reason to change your shell name. --aklapper (talk) 10:17, 8 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
1) As I said before, there is NOT an option to disable it there.
2) I have not used it YET, but I will soon and I would like it changed.
Ilovemydoodle2 (talk) 11:24, 8 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
1) You could use "Edit source" instead of "Edit". 2) The account was created only a week ago thus it is not a good use of anyone else's time to change it (and no reason has been provided). Please do not continue to post non-personal questions on my personal talkpage, as that does not scale. Thanks for your understanding, --aklapper (talk) 12:55, 8 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
1) I can, but it is quite annoying as I often instinctively click there.
2) The guidelines say to make a shell name short, but I could not think of anything at first, so I chose my regular username. Later, I discovered that other users shortened my name to "ILMD" on other wikis. So I wanted to change it to that.
3) I am sorry for posting on a personal talk page, but I really do not know where to post this. I could not find a VP, an AN, or any kind of page like that. Sorry.
Ilovemydoodle2 (talk) 11:44, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
1) Feel free to hide it via your personal CSS. --aklapper (talk) 16:14, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes Done! What about 2) and 3)? – Ilovemydoodle2 (talk) 18:09, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Depending on what you plan to use a shell account for, there should be related help documentation. --aklapper (talk) 18:41, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
