Tool Migration from the Grid

Etherpad archiving collaboration?

I noticed your new https://toolsadmin.wikimedia.org/tools/id/etherpad-backup while I was looking to see if anyone had something working already for etherpad.wikimedia.org content archiving. Are you interested in collaborating with folks on making that idea a reality?

I have been starting to noodle with ideas at phab:T417207 for archiving things I want to save. That got me thinking about generic archiving support and putting energy into making a Toolforge tool that anyone could use to archive an existing pad from https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/. There are a lot of different ways something like that could work, but one that is interesting to me would be to use S3-compatible object storage to give the tool an extensible storage system that does not tie the tool to Toolforge's NFS storage backend.

There is certainly space for multiple attempts at solving this problem for the community, but if you are open to working with others I would love to at least hear what you are thinking about doing and maybe finding ways to help you. -- BryanDavis (talk) 22:54, 11 February 2026 (UTC)

I didn't think about making this a bigger tool yet. All I wanted to achieve for now was backing up all 927 pads linked In dewiki so you can replace "etherpad.wikimedia.org" with "etherpad-backup.toolforge.org" to access them. But now that this is done... sure, why not! I'll have a closer look at your ideas tomorrow.
