I'd like to see a more structured approach to finding the actual solution for this issue

I agree with the basic assumption that providing a VPN solution that is easily integrated with Windows, OS X, iOS, and Linux clients would make interacting with the replica databases and performing local development tasks easier. I would like to "see the work" however on the choice of OpenVPN + LDAP as the technology that should be used to provide the VPN.

Adding a new service that is available to all Labs users is not a trivial undertaking and will require long term maintenance by both volunteers and WMF Labs staff. Making the wrong choice of technology can have consequences for maintenance costs and client support. I would like to see a reasonably detailed feature matrix describing what an acceptable solution would provide and a comparison of at least two possible implementations against that matrix before we move into actually planning the deployment. --BryanDavis (talk) 15:21, 9 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
