Summary

One of the bits application servers (mw1151) ran into disk trouble causing memcached to be unable to store or retrieve any values. This was resulting in three main problems for requests that were Varnish cache misses for bits.wikimedia.org:

  1. Much more computation (since nothing was cached)
  2. ResourceLoader modules constantly got their timestamp renewed (each request saw current as "new", no memory of previous version)
  3. Extensions relying on cache for registering extra modules were essentially disabled (e.g. Gadgets).

Details

ResourceLoader uses object caching for storing result of minification, and for detecting changes in module manifests (it caches the serialised manifest and if the cached value differs, timestamp is renewed).

mw1151 was doing much more computational tasks from PHP as nothing was cached (database lookups, minification etc.).

ResourceLoader was also constantly renewing the last-modified timestamp of the module manifests as it had no memory of the previous version.

And extensions registering additional modules (e.g. Gadgets) that require cache, were unable to register these modules and as such these modules were missing for users hitting that server. The phrase "require cache" is carefully chosen here as it seems Gadget::loadStructuredList() should've fallen back to computing the value on demand. Unlike message cache, Gadgets doesn't demand cache and doesn't prevent computation (not explicitly anyway). We should investigate why this wasn't computing the value on demand.

  • 2014-04-17 00:15 On mw1151, Gadget::loadStructuredList() returns false. Memcached has no value for 'enwiki:gadgets-definition:7' and is unable to get or set any value for that key.
  • 2014-04-17 00:20 Ori stops Apache and disables puppet on mw1151 so that varnish stops forwarding requests to it.
  • 2014-04-17 00:20 Ori confirms mw1151 has been depooled (varnishadm on cp1056 recognizes mw1151 as "sick").
