RE: Welcome to Tool Labs

Hi Tim, I have used Toolserver before to fetch data for academic research. It looks like the Labs were created with a slightly different purpose - for Wikipedia development. Thus you have projects-tools which people can join to work on specific tasks. If I want to write and run scripts that would get me the data such as number of edits for certain articles etc., what do I do? How can I do it within the Labs paradigm? Do I create a tool for that?

Thanks!

You don't have to; for one-off queries you can just "sql enwiki_p" (for example) to connect to the English Wikipedia database and run some queries. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 15:36, 13 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

RE: Welcome to Tool Labs

Thank you!

Someone told me on IRC that 'tools' is a little easier (though slower) to do what I want.

As I've never done this before, I thought to start testing there, and eventually move to other Labs projects (or a new one).

What do you think? - Raylton P. Sousa (talk) 12:53, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

You can install MediaWiki as a tool account, so that you have a wiki for example under http://tools.wmflabs.org/some-account/w/index.php?title=Some_page. But for many extensions, there are more focused projects that target special extensions or use cases. You can look at the list of all projects and search for "Extension" to get an idea. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 17:32, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Tim for welcome and activation. As I wrote in my brief self-introduction, I'm deeply worried about the whole thing, I remember my first steps into Toolserver as a nightmare, and I'll go on very slowly with my tests; but I invited here it:s:User:Candalua too, that's really competent and skilled and drives a global bot, so I'm sure I'll get needed help without any need to waste your time. :-) --Alex brollo (talk) 09:35, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Error in login

Hi brother, when I login to labs via putty, get the following error:

Using username "▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒".

If you are having access problems, please see: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Access#Accessing_public_and_private_instances Server refused our key

so what should I do? Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 18:07, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Have you looked at the provided link? I. e., are you using the Labs shell username, do you use the key whose public key you uploaded to your wikitech preferences? --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 18:17, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, all steps had been copleted before login. Is shell username same as my username on this wikitech?? Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 18:24, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
No; go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal; your shell username is listed there under "Instance shell account name". --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 19:08, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, problem is shell account. Now successfully logged in. again thanks :) Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 11:32, 12 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Shell access

Hi brother, please grant me shell access again. I have read all instructions and rules and would follow them, thanks. Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 18:39, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've restored your access to shell and the Tools project again. It looks as if in the process your personal home directory on Tools was deleted, so you'll need to re-upload your files there. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:33, 22 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Batch jobs

I'm launching, as alebot/itsource, sequencies of (heavy) individual jsub calls listed into a .sh file at dev-eqiad. But I'm running .sh file from console/from bastion, just to have some immediate console feedback of ongoing jobs who have a -sync y parameter (so I see output code 0/1/SIGKILL at the end on any job).

Is it an acceptable compromise, or I'd better run the .sh file too under jsub? Alex brollo (talk) 12:21, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

That looks perfectly okay to me. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:48, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Consider that I'm the first one to be deply surprised that the whole thing runs, considering my skill level (almost zero) into a unix/linux environment.... o_O; a proof that help pages, and help from users into wiki context, are much more successful than in best dreams. Account creation strangeness

Dear Tim,

something strange has happened when creating my account. As there appears to be no "village pump" or similar on this wiki, I thought I'd ask you as your contributions according to Special:RecentChanges appear to indicate you may be the right person to address regarding account creation matters (if not, please tell me where to ask or whether I should file a bug report).

  1. Years ago, in the svn days, I had an svn account named "grafzahl". Now I wanted to create myself a new account here.
  2. I chose the user name "GrafZahl" (with capital Z, like on the other wikis) and "grafzahl" as shell account name. I tried this twice, both times getting an error message (not allowed to change external account).
  3. First I thought maybe my old svn account was migrated and tried to request a new password, but the user name "GrafZahl" did not exist. So then I thought, maybe the shell name "grafzahl" was locked because it was once used during the svn times by me.
  4. So I tried again with shell account name "gz" instead of "grafzahl", and presto! it worked, but: according to my preferences, my user name is now "Grafzahl" (with lower case z), and my shell account name is my old "grafzahl" instead of "gz". What has happened here?

In any case, it's probably good I have my old shell account name back. It would be nice if my user name could be changed to "GrafZahl" (with a capital Z) to be in line with my other wiki accounts, though. Thanks in advance, your help would be appreciated!

--Grafzahl (talk) 23:00, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

At the moment there are two accounts for you:
  1. Your migrated SVN account with the shell account name "grafzahl" and the wikitech username "grafzahl" (lower-case G), and
  2. your newly created account with the shell account name "gz" and the wikitech username "Grafzahl" (upper-case G).
However, you could never ever log in with the migrated SVN account, as on wikitech usernames are automatically capitalized like on other wikis. But fixing this is a) not one of my capabilities :-) and b) (reportedly) non-trivial if possible at all. So I'll point User:Andrew Bogott here so that he can chime in. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 23:40, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks for the heads-up, Tim!
--Grafzahl (talk) 08:23, 25 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
It sounds to me like the correct solution is to a) abandon the Grafzahl account, and b) rename 'grafzahl' to 'GrafZahl'. I'm pretty sure that b) can be done safely; would you like me to go ahead with that?
andrew (talk) 16:16, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
By "rename 'grafzahl' to 'GrafZahl'", you mean the wikitech user name, not the shell account name, correct? Yes, that sounds reasonable, please go ahead with that. The one remaining strange thing is that, according to the Special:Preferences of the Grafzahl wikitech username (which I'll abandon after the rename), the instance shell account name is 'grafzahl', not 'gz'. It's as if that shell acount name is attached to both the 'grafzahl' (the future 'GrafZahl') and 'Grafzahl' wikitech user names. Hopefully, that won't cause problems.
Thank you very much for your help, Andrew!
--Grafzahl (talk) 18:30, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK, I think this is done. I'm slightly concerned that I only found one account for you in the mediaiwiki DB (but two in ldap) but I'm pretty sure your MW account will now cooperate with your shell account. Please let me know how it goes.
--andrew (talk) 20:02, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yup, I can login as GrafZahl, and 'grafzahl' is still my shell acount name, so everything looks fine. It's getting late here, so I'll try out the shell tomorrow. Anyway, thank you very much!--GrafZahl (talk) 21:51, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Regarding shell

Hello. Thank you for processing my shell access request. There's a minor problem I encountered, though.

I used to have commit access to Subversion before the migration to Git with the username mgrabovsky. Recently, I decided I wanted to become active again, and wanted to create an account here so that I could work with Gerrit. However, when using mgrabovsky as the shell account name on the account creating page, I got back "Account creation error. There was either an authentication database error or you are not allowed to update your external account."

I asked about this on #wikimedia-dev and #wikimedia-tech, but got no response. Therefore, I tried grabovsky (with which I'm not entirely happy) and it worked. My question is then: Is it possible to change the shell username or "merge" it with (or connect this account to) the previous user which I used with SVN?

Apparently, there is a bug in our NFS server (settings) at the moment. I have filed a report to track it; if you have a Bugzilla account, please add yourself to the CC list if you are interested.
On the command line, you can work around the bug by executing newgrp local-tahir before copying files to your tool's directory. However, I don't know how this can be done with scp or WinSCP.
Unfortunately, I don't have better news at the moment, sorry :-). --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 06:36, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Lost access to tools-dev.wmflabs.org

Hi Tim, I used to be able to access my folder (torin8) at tools-dev.wmflabs.org, but now cannot connect to my account. Can you please check it?

I'd like to connect to bast1001 or terbium, but when I log in, the server denies my access. I need the access to run some MySQL queries. Can you add me to the relevant groups of users? Thanks! Torin

As far as I can tell, your account looks fine. What error message do you get? Are you sure you use the same key that you uploaded to your preferences? Are you logging in as torin8@tools-dev.wmflabs.org? --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:46, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am logging in as torin8@tools-dev.wmflabs.org and my SSH key is the same as in preferences. The error I was getting was permission denied. Now when I try to connect to tools-dev.wmflabs.org, I always get a Network error: Connection timed out (I am using the same credentials). This happens both for Putty and WinSCP. The only server that I can successfully can connect to is torin8@bastion.wmflabs.org. But it seems that I cannot run MySQL queries from under this server. Can you please help me? Torin04:44, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Also, when I am logging in via tools-login.wmflabs.org and try to access my folder in home/torin8, I get the following error message from WinSCP:
Permission denied.
Error code: 3
Error message from server: Permission denied
Request code: 3
In Putty, I get the following line:
Could not chdir to home directory /home/torin8: Permission denied
-bash: /home/torin8/.bash_profile: Permission denied

Torin 07:47, 20 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Also, when I run MySQL queries from tools-login.wmflabs.org I get this:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'torin8'@'10.68.16.7' (using password: NO)
It happens no matter if I run it as torin8@tools-login:/data/project/icelab$ or if I become my tool (Icelab).

Need for a human tutor

First, thakns for your attention and comments.

Really I feel the need of some tutoring - I'm both a DIY (do it yourself) "programmer" and almost completely confused by a linux environment, I'm using happily Windows XP on my pc.

Can I address my banal questions here? Can you suggest other possible tutors/tutoring pages if my questions waste your time?

I moved to tools-dev and removed from python code my personal access keys to Internet Archive, so I can publish my code here; my only worry is, that they could kill some valuable programmers by this letal incident. --Alex brollo (talk) 08:53, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

You're not wasting my time :-). But unfortunately, I'm not knowledgeable about each and every programming language, tool, etc. I guess Nova Resource Talk:Tools or the mailing list (labs-l) might have a broader audience that might yield better results. Don't be shy about publishing your code though; it's the only way to become better at it :-). --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:43, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cryptic welcome

"welcome to Wikimedia Labs! I would like to inform you that your shell request was processed and you should be able to login to Bastion host now at bastion.wmflabs.org"

a) thank you :) b) what shell request? c) why do I want to log into the Bastion host and what is it?

I am trying to transfer my extension code from a wikimedia page to github, but following the link [] took me here and a whole new set of 'places' with no mention of github or gerrit.

This was a year ago and it was instantly off-putting, so I didn't bother to take it any further. Now I am trying again and thought I'd give you some feedback on a welcome message that assumes a significant amount of pre-knowledge from a brand new user.

Caring about wikitech

Hi Tim, Help:Access#Access_FAQ says "You should care about wikitech!" Queries stats

I'm trying to understand what load Tool Labs is currently sustaining, but it seems we lack meaningful statistics? Is there an equivalent for queries count? I found only the hits stats (they appear to be less some 5 % of the TS') and SGE stats (but on TS they're broken). --Nemo 09:54, 15 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not aware of any "meaningful" statistics; if you delve into qacct and/or ask Jaime, you can probably get a number for CPUs used or queries run per hour, but with the diversity of the tools and their code quality IMHO it is hard to imagine a metric that conveys some meaning. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 23:24, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I can now login via ssh at tools-login.wmflabs.org. In this server I can connect to the English Wikipedia database running sql enwiki_p. But when I try to connect to the Portuguese Wikipedia database, which is the one that I would like to use to fetch data, I get the following error:

rodrigoprimo@tools-login:~$ sql ptwiki_p

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'u10374'@'127.0.0.1' (using password: YES)

Am I missing something?

Best regards,

I assume this has been resolved in the mean time. When you encounter a problem, please ask in our IRC channel at #wikimedia-labs connect or send a mail to our mailing list labs-l@lists.wikimedia.org. If the problem persists, please make sure to file a task in Phabricator in the #Tool-Labs project. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:01, 25 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

Hi Tim, Because you're the first one here contacted me I suggest you my first questions. Reading English is not bad, but my English writing is very poor, is a google translation for this sufficient? What is a shell user? You have a Dutch name like, do you speak Dutch?--Jos1950 (talk) 22:36, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I was born about 3.5 km too far east to speak Dutch :-). You can probably find other users speaking Dutch in our IRC channel at #wikimedia-labs connect or on our mailing list labs-l@lists.wikimedia.org. It is hard to explain what a shell user is without understanding what your knowledge in this area is or what you want to do in the Tools project. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 00:23, 25 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Change a shell username

Hello,

I would like to change my shell account name. Could I do it by keeping my user account? Thanks by advance. Automatik (talk) 11:42, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Tool to delete

Hello, trying to make my bot alive, accidentally I made a second, unnecessary Tool called ato-01. Could you be so kind as to delete it? Many thanks. Ato 01 (talk) 18:40, 9 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Python code

I tried:

lbertolotti@tools-login:~$ jsub python bot.py

at Tool labs, the job was accepted but it did nothing, when I ran it from my terminal it worked.

well I've managed to run it using tool labs on linux terminal, however I can't get the job to be executed everyday 19:45 UTC time. Is seems the bot needs to be approved first.Lbertolotti (talk) 16:37, 29 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Renaming

Hi Tim. I want to rename my username but I don't know what's the process. :-(
Could you rename my username "Gnumarcoo" to ".avgas"? Thanks, regards. --Gnumarcoo (talk) 15:30, 13 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

ssh into the tools-exec instances

Hi Tim. Since a couple of weeks (just over a month) I have the problem that I can not login to the tools-exec instances (e.g. 'ssh tools-exec-1215' returns me a 'Permission denied (publickey)'). That gives me some problems with bot maintenance - basically I have to kill a bot to be able to clear / update it's files, when I update files on bastion, they get overwritten by the tools-exec instance version. Can you inform me how I update the keys on the instances (or better, can the instances just have the keys 'copied' like in the past on the tools-exec instances)? Thanks! --Beetstra (talk) 03:34, 25 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Removing Tool

Can you remove this tool: editing-pattern-subpage-searcher? Thank you. --JustBerry (talk) 02:27, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Done. I got "Access denied for user 's52694'@'%' to database 'mysql'" errors when trying to list possible databases on c1.labsdb, c2.labsdb, c3.labsdb and tools.labsdb for that tool, so I assumed there were none. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 20:20, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Happy New Year

Hi Tim , Happy New Year. I Have Issue With public SSH Key, When I Open PuTTY I Get This Message : Server refused our key. Can You Help me Please.--Jarallah (talk) 07:32, 5 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I do not use PuTTY, but we have a help page for that (linked from the top of this page). A frequent cause for such errors is that the user names are different in Labs and on the local machine and the user did not tell his secure shell to log in with the correct one. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 12:17, 5 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request for deleting of a tool lab instance

Hi Tim,

I created a lab instance by mistake and can't delete it, please since you are the admin, I will like you to delete this lab instance for me. The name of the lab instance is "gsoc-dev". Delete that one. Thanks and I will be waiting for your feedback.

Do you mean the tool "gsoc-dev" in Tool Labs? --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 01:33, 15 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Using keyboard-interactive authentication

hi tim how can i fix this problem "Using keyboard-interactive authentication", i can't login my account, any help?--Jarallah II (talk) 02:19, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. I assume this means that your ssh has no public key configured for that host/account. I believe the message indicates that you are using PuTTY, and in this case our help page for that might be useful for you. Otherwise I would suggest that you ask on IRC, on the mailing list or file a Phabricator task; we have a number of PuTTY users who might be able to help you. I personally do not use PuTTY or Windows. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 10:01, 7 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Bot Request

Hello I am bibek and I mostly edit Nepali Wikipedia . We need a bot in nepali wiki and I am thinking of creating it. I know the program that I should give for my bot but I don't know how to make my bot automatically do work. So please help me. ThanksBibek bro (talk) 14:55, 14 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry, I can't help you with writing a bot. You can probably find people experienced in writing bots and willing to help in our IRC channel #wikimedia-labs connect or our mailing list labs-l@lists.wikimedia.org. If you want to start developing on your own, I would recommend the Pywikibot framework. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 02:20, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Tool isbn

Hallo,

--G (talk) 20:17, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

--Tim Landscheidt (talk) 11:17, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Getting extension code for 'ZoomableImages' on gerrit...

Thanks for the quick reply! I did submit a request on MediaWiki prompted by the "Extension code in wiki" template on the extension page I created in MediaWiki. It has been my understanding that gerrit is in the wikitech orbit... and I need access -- presuming the code I wrote is worthy of gerrit. In any case, I find the process somewhat slow and convoluted... but I am hoping it will all make sense when I'm a little further into it. I guess that I'll get access if the "New repositories request on MediaWiki" is granted. Nephron (talk) 05:36, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

It is convoluted because it was not designed, but grew organically, and documentation not always keeping up with code :-). I don't think that you need shell access to work with Gerrit; otherwise please holler. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 11:25, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Fast approval

Hi, thanks for the very fast approval of my request for shell. I didn't think it would be granted this fast and it'll really help my bot work. Regards, --Zenith4237 (talk) 06:27, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Kleine Bitte

Gruß --Udo T. (talk) 19:05, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ich sehe, Du hast den richtigen Briefkasten gefunden :-). (Das Löschen erfordert erweiterte Administrationsrechte und kann daher ein wenig dauern.) --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 17:47, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
