Talk:Password and 2FA reset

From Wikitech

User guide

This page is more of a manual page for admins to reset password than a user guide for Wikitech users that have lost their password or that need it to be reset. I have added a section with simple instruction for users. I hope it is ok. --CristianCantoro (talk) 10:08, 30 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

The only intended users for this entire wiki are Wikimedia sysadmins, such as people resetting other people's passwords. I'm not sure adding this is worthwhile. Jforrester (talk) 16:04, 30 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Suggested update to Password and 2FA reset/Confirming identities

Re: Password and 2FA reset/Confirming identities, I was wondering if we could add another id verification option to the article that would be accepted as an alternative to either sharing their hash with an admin, getting on a call with them personally, or submitting a phabricator ticket.

If none of the above are options, then the suggesiton here is can the user's manager vouch for them? This may come in handy in situations where that may be the only option for a user to get their Phabricator 2fa reset, for example.

This is because some users aren't very technical, so they may not have access to their hash, or they can't access their Phabricator account so they can't submit a Phabricator ticket to request a 2fa reset. Which leaves the admin option. But if they aren't a P&T staff member and no one on the engineering team knows them personally, a Slack call won't serve as suitable identity verification method. Therefore, their manager vouching for their identity seems like an acceptable alternative.

I just wanted to put it out therefor discussion. JLam-WMF (talk) 19:48, 17 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
