Rsync isn't the only game in town when it comes to high-performance bulk data transfers.

High Performance Bulk Data Transfer (PDF) explains why rsync's performance can be disappointing and gives tips for tuning it, as well as a survey of alternative tools (page 32 onwards):

  • GridFTP
  • bbcp
  • lftp (parallel accelerator for HTTP & FTP)
  • axel (parallel accelerator for HTTP & FTP)
